ABOUT THE WORK
Stone-Like Thing (Ribena/Jurassic Sandstone) is a playful experiment with photography and materiality, an experiment in which soft drinks are absorbed by the paper to become a physical material in the work. The use of toning is a means to draw contemporary, everyday substances (soft drinks) into direct dialogue with the photographic image. Toning traditionally uses high value elements (gold, selenium and silver), but through using everyday solutions, the artist plays with traditional darkroom techniques and material hierarchies. The image was taken on Laig Bay on the Isle of Eigg and represents Jurassic Sandstone rock forms.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Lorna Macintyre’s (b. 1977, Glasgow) varied practice draws upon literature, poetry, archaeology and mythology, creating both photographic and sculptural works, which see materials pushed to develop in unexpected ways, allowing chance and process to take pivotal roles. Macintyre has exhibited widely, including solo exhibitions at Mount Stuart, Isle of Bute; Wiels, Brussels; Kunsthaus Baselland; ICA, London and most recently Dundee Contemporary Arts in late 2018.
