Join us on Sunday 10 November for a fascinating talk by Malcolm Haddow, Support Officer at South West Scotland Environmental Information Centre, on the local moths of Dumfries & Galloway – home to many of the 2500 species found in the UK.

Drawing upon our current exhibition, Chiara Camoni’s murmur, buzz, hiss and rub, Malcolm will look at moth species found in Dumfriesshire, including the Elephant Hawk-moth, the Buff-tip and the Bilberry Pug, which occurs in its only current Scottish site at Kirkconnell Flow,  and talk about how moths navigate the world, the role they play on the local ecosystem, their relationship with other species and the impact they have on human society.

Chiara has described her exhibitions as gatherings of eyes, of figures, of presences, of animals, of insects – ‘some visible right away, other emerging slowly.’ Her show at Cample has been inspired by the richness and diversity of species found around her village in North Tuscany in Italy and those found around Cample, not least the spiders, insects and creatures that attempt to make their home in and around our building.

Although Malcolm will talk about moths, he will also be happy to answer questions about other local invertebrates too. He will lead a moth trapping workshop for us in spring/summer 2025.
