Chosen by Young Assistant Grace Jones to screen alongside Mark Lyken’s exhibition New Town New Wave.

Filled with close-ups of food preparation and sumptuous shots of Taiwanese cuisine, Eat Drink Man Woman follows a widowed master chef and the three single daughters who live with him as the women search for love. It was the final film in director Ang Lee’s trilogy of stories exploring cross-generational changes and conflicts in culture and behaviour in his native Taiwan.

Eat Drink Man Woman was nominated for an Academy Award for best foreign film. Like its predecessors in the trilogy, Pushing Hands (1992) and The Wedding Banquet (1993), the film features Taiwanese actor Sihung Lung, who plays the master chef.

Lee went on to earn international acclaim for movies as varied as Sense and Sensibility (1995), The Ice Storm (1997), and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), before winning a best director Oscar for Brokeback Mountain (2005).
