Red iron has been bound to human culture for millennia in the form of red ochre. This material has been used by peoples all across the planet from the islands of Indonesia to the deserts of the western United States. During this workshop, inspired by Claire Barclay’s current exhibition RAWLESS and guided by Edward Campbell and Lucy Lee from the Old Mill, we will be looking at some of the symbolisms and meanings of the colour red and its story through time. We will then process together some collected iron oxide, from a source in Galloway, with which to make paint. Participants can then take home some of the pigment and paint, made together in the session.

About the workshop hosts

Lucy Lee and Edward Campbell run The Old Mill – an exhibition space, bookshop and art studios situated in the beautiful port village of Palnackie on the Solway coastline. Edward and Lucy’s aim for The Old Mill is to create a space for enquiry into the connection between creativity, spirit and the natural environment. In their upper studios they run various creative workshops based around making art materials from plants and other foraged materials.
