In this workshop we will be processing the root of the madder plant, from which various shades of red dye and ink are achieved. Inspired by Aslı Çavuşoğlu’s current exhibition at Cample Line, Pink as a Cabbage / Green as an Onion / Blue as an Orange, Edward Campbell and Lucy Lee from The Old Mill will run through how to collectively process this root into various inks and dyes. During this workshop we will be asking, when we follow the roots of colour and culture, where does it lead us?
This will be a gentle session of working and being with this extraordinary plant. Participants will learn some of the history of madder, and will learn simple processes of dying wool, as well as botanical ink making.
About the workshop hosts
Edward Campbell and Lucy Lee run The Old Mill – an exhibition space, bookshop and art studios situated in the port village of Palnackie on the Solway coastline. Edward and Lucy’s aim for The Old Mill is to create a space for enquiry into the connection between creativity, spirit and the natural environment. In their upper studios they run various creative workshops based around making art materials from plants and other foraged materials.
