Booking required – tickets available on a sliding scale:
£8 | £5 | £3
Join us for this weaving workshop aimed at beginners, led by Thornhill-based tapestry artist Gyllian Thomson. In this session we will weave yarns on a small wooden frame. Gyllian will talk us through the basic skills involved in creating a tapestry, and then you will have the chance to create a design or a shape using block colours or blended colours. You can work intuitively or you are welcome to bring along a very simple design to follow as well.
All frames will be warped up ready to weave and all materials will be provided.
There will be a chance to look at Sayan Chanda’s tapestry works, currently part of his exhibition Between the Two Fires.
Gyllian graduated in 1995 from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee with a first-class honours degree in Constructed Textiles. Her journey took her into teaching but three years ago circumstances allowed her to return to the loom. Her work is her own personal response to what she sees in the world round her. First, she paints then she interprets these into tapestries using wool, cotton, acrylic, threads, and plastics. She works on an upright scaffold loom and weaves painterly marks via warp and weft. She lives with a chronic condition and in a way she feels she shares some of the fragility of her tapestries.
